Ghani: Afghanistan Entering New Phase of Regional Crisis

DID Press: Former Afghanistan President Ashraf Ghani says recent Pakistani airstrikes on eastern provinces have pushed Afghanistan into a “new phase of crisis,” reflecting worsening insecurity and growing regional instability.

In a statement, Ghani said civilian casualties—particularly women and children—highlight the severity of the current crisis and the country’s increasing vulnerability. He described the strikes as more than a security incident, calling them a sign of deeper political and security deterioration.

He further stated that Afghanistan has become increasingly isolated from regional and international engagement in recent years, reducing global attention and limiting effective responses to violence against civilians.

Ghani questioned why security promises have not been fulfilled and why violations of Afghanistan’s sovereignty have not triggered stronger international reactions, stressing that the Afghan people have the right to understand the causes of ongoing instability.

He warned that continued instability could have serious consequences for political stability, national security, and the country’s economic future, adding that the widening gap between the population and authorities is increasing vulnerability.

The former president also called for a broad national dialogue, saying Afghanistan’s future must be built on political consensus, inclusive participation, and a shared understanding of national interests.

The comments come after Pakistan conducted a second round of airstrikes this month targeting areas in Paktika, Paktia, and Kunar, reportedly killing dozens of people.
