UK Considers Requiring Refugees to Repay Part of State Support Costs

DID Press: British government is considering a proposal that would require some refugees and asylum recipients to repay part of the public support they received before becoming eligible for permanent residency.

The measure is part of a broader effort by the government to reform the immigration system and reduce public spending associated with housing and supporting asylum seekers.

According to British media reports, officials are developing a mechanism under which individuals who later obtain employment authorization or achieve a sufficient level of income could be required to reimburse part of the costs incurred for their accommodation, care, and government assistance.

Under preliminary proposals, repayments could reportedly reach up to £10,000 per person.

Shabana Mahmood defended the proposal, arguing that individuals who have benefited from government and taxpayer-funded support should contribute to covering part of those costs if they are financially able to do so.

She said the objective is to strike a balance between providing protection to those in need and safeguarding public resources.

The UK government argues that the rising number of asylum applications in recent years has placed significant pressure on public finances and that reforms are necessary to ensure the long-term sustainability of the support system.

Officials also contend that the proposal could help reduce the burden on taxpayers while maintaining assistance for vulnerable individuals seeking protection in the country.
