Iran, Afghanistan Push for Expanded Anti-Drug Collaboration

DID Press: Afghanistan and Iran have emphasized the need to strengthen regional cooperation in combating narcotics production, trafficking, and consumption during a joint ceremony marking World Drug Day.

Fazal Mohammad Haqqani, Afghanistan’s acting ambassador in Tehran, attended the event and reaffirmed Afghanistan’s commitment to continuing efforts against drug production, trafficking, and abuse.

He described narcotics as one of the most serious threats to security, public health, and sustainable development, stressing that effective counter-narcotics action requires coordinated regional cooperation, information sharing, and stronger prevention and treatment programs.

Haqqani also called for sustained international support for anti-drug initiatives and the development of alternative livelihoods for vulnerable communities affected by the drug economy.

He added that regional cooperation can play a key role in reducing the social and economic harms associated with narcotics.

Iranian officials and representatives of international organizations also highlighted the principle of “shared responsibility,” calling for expanded collaboration in combating drug trafficking, preventing addiction, and strengthening rehabilitation programs.
