Afghanistan–Uzbekistan Rail Freight Doubles

DID Press: Rail freight between Afghanistan and Uzbekistan doubled in the first five months of the year, underscoring the growing role of the bilateral corridor in regional trade and transit.

According to figures released by Uzbekistan Railways, more than 41,000 rail wagons, carrying over 2.7 million tonnes of cargo, were transported between the two countries during the period, compared with about 20,415 wagons in the same period last year.

Railway officials and trade representatives said the expansion of rail transport has helped reduce logistics costs, improve cargo security, accelerate deliveries, and strengthen Afghanistan’s position as a regional transit hub.

The railway corridor is also increasingly serving as a key transit route for goods from Russia, Belarus, and Kazakhstan, reinforcing its strategic importance in regional trade networks.
