Uzbekistan Reviews Green Air Corridor for Afghan Traders

DID Press: Uzbekistan is reviewing the creation of a “green air corridor” for Afghan traders, a move that could allow them to use existing international air routes via Uzbekistan to transport goods more efficiently.

Following a government meeting chaired by Uzbek President Shavkat Mirziyoyev, Surkhandarya Governor Ulugbek Qosimov said Afghan traders’ request for the air corridor had been preliminarily approved, with a commission expected to study implementation details.

Qosimov said Uzbekistan is expanding trade and cross-border transport with Afghanistan, noting that the number of border corridors between the two countries has increased from four to twelve.

He added that the daily capacity for freight trucks has risen significantly, while railway cargo capacity has also nearly doubled, reflecting growing regional trade flows.

According to him, more than 250,000 tons of goods were transported through a key logistics hub last year, while 220,000 tons were moved in just the first six months of this year.

The governor also said 50 hectares of land will be allocated in the border region for a new logistics center to support rising transit demand.

Discussions also included proposals to expand Afghan agricultural exports, particularly organic products, which face challenges in international marketing and supply chains.

The meeting further proposed designating the Termez district as a key gateway for the Trans-Afghan corridor linking China, Central Asia, Afghanistan, and Pakistan.
