UN Officials Urge Engagement With Afghanistan, Call for Inclusive Government

DID Press: Senior United Nations officials have warned that Western countries should maintain engagement and cooperation with Afghanistan to prevent a return to instability, stressing that ignoring the country could have consequences beyond its borders.

Barham Salih and Alexander De Croo said after their visit to Afghanistan that constructive engagement could contribute to preserving security and stability in the country.

UN officials noted that nearly six million people, mainly returning from Pakistan and Iran, have returned to Afghanistan since 2023, with around two million more expected to return by the end of this year. They warned that the large-scale returns are placing significant pressure on local communities.

No Western country has formally recognized the Taliban administration.

Despite ongoing challenges, the UN officials pointed to improvements in security conditions, anti-corruption efforts, and a decline in drug production as some positive developments in Afghanistan. However, they warned that reduced international attention could create broader regional and global consequences.

Salih stressed the need for meaningful reforms and the establishment of an inclusive and participatory government in Afghanistan.

De Croo also highlighted the impact of declining international aid on ordinary Afghans, saying that 422 health facilities have been forced to close over the past year due to funding shortages, leaving more than three million people without access to medical services.

The two UN officials visited Afghanistan following the extension of the mandate of the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA).
