Student Protests Against Modi Government Continue in India

DID Press: Thousands of students and opposition supporters rallied in New Delhi on Tuesday as protests against Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government continued, a day after clashes between police and demonstrators demanding education reforms and the resignation of Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan.

According to reports, tens of thousands of protesters attempted to march toward the Indian Parliament on Monday despite police restrictions. Security forces used batons and tear gas to disperse the crowd, leaving at least 60 people injured, while authorities dismantled the main protest site and removed demonstrators’ tents.

Indian police said 118 officers were also injured during the unrest and that 70 protesters had been arrested. The Modi government has not publicly commented on the reported use of force, while opposition parties have condemned the police response.

The demonstrations intensified following the cancellation of the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) for medical admissions after allegations that examination papers had been leaked. The exam, taken by more than 2.28 million candidates, was later conducted again.

Reports have also linked the education scandal to the suicides of more than 20 students, further fueling public anger and calls for accountability.
