Flash Floods Kill Two, Cause Widespread Damage in Northeastern Afghanistan

DID Press: Heavy rainfall and flash floods have killed at least two people and caused widespread damage to homes, farmland, orchards and public infrastructure in several provinces of northeastern Afghanistan, local authorities and humanitarian organizations said.

Afghanistan’s state-run Bakhtar News Agency and the Afghan Red Crescent Society confirmed that one person was killed in Siah Gerd district of Parwan province after being swept away by floodwaters.

In Kapisa province, flash floods triggered by torrential rain damaged pomegranate orchards, homes, roads and public infrastructure in the Badrab area of Tagab district.Flooding also caused significant property damage in the Rukha and Dara districts of Panjshir province, where the road linking Dara district to the provincial capital was blocked, according to local reports.

Residents in Logar province also reported extensive financial losses as flooding affected communities across the province.The latest flooding follows a series of deadly weather-related disasters across Afghanistan. On July 20, flash floods in Parun, the capital of Nuristan province, and surrounding areas killed more than 40 people.

The United Nations said humanitarian assistance has begun reaching flood-affected communities in central, eastern and southeastern Afghanistan, but warned that severe funding shortages are hampering ongoing relief operations.
