Taliban Convoy Attacked En Route to Badakhshan Amid Rising Security Tensions

DID Press: A Taliban military convoy traveling from Kabul to Badakhshan was reportedly attacked in Baghlan Province, as security tensions and internal divisions continue to escalate in northeastern Afghanistan.

According to informed sources, the convoy came under attack on Saturday night in the Doshi district of Baghlan while en route to Badakhshan. Sources said part of the convoy was damaged, but no group has claimed responsibility for the attack. The Taliban have not commented on the nature of the assault, possible casualties, or the identity of the attackers.

The incident comes amid growing instability in Badakhshan, which has emerged as one of Afghanistan’s most volatile regions in recent weeks. French newspaper Libération recently described the province as the area most susceptible to organized anti-Taliban protests, citing recent developments as evidence of increasing pressure on the group’s authority.

The attack follows the brief capture of Yaftal-e Payin district by the newly formed armed group Sepahiyan-e Mihan, led by former Afghan security force member Abdul Qayum Malang. According to reports, the group temporarily seized the district headquarters, disarmed Taliban fighters, and captured several military vehicles before withdrawing without reported losses after Taliban reinforcements arrived.

The security situation has also been compounded by reported internal disputes within the Taliban. Juma Khan Fateh, a Tajik Taliban commander, has reportedly clashed with forces loyal to the movement’s Kandahar leadership over control of gold mines in Shaki District. Efforts by Taliban army chief Fasihuddin Fitrat to mediate the dispute reportedly failed, allowing the disagreement to reach senior levels of the group’s leadership.

Security analysts note that Badakhshan’s mountainous terrain, borders with China, Pakistan, and Tajikistan, and its long history of resistance make it well suited for guerrilla warfare. They assess the attack on the convoy in Baghlan as part of mounting security pressure on Taliban forces in northeastern Afghanistan.
