DID Press: Asif Durrani, Pakistan’s former special representative for Afghanistan, says the comprehensive defense pact between Pakistan, Saudi Arabia and Turkey goes beyond a military agreement and could represent the first practical step toward establishing a regional security architecture for South and West Asia.
Durrani said the agreement could encourage regional countries to reduce their reliance on security providers from outside the region and assume greater responsibility for maintaining their own security and stability.
He added that if the trend continues, it could create an opportunity to address long-standing regional conflicts, including the Palestinian issue, through greater regional cooperation and locally driven initiatives.
Turkey, Saudi Arabia and Pakistan signed a joint defense pact on Wednesday under which an armed attack against any one of the three countries would be considered an attack against all three.
