Taliban Official: US Opposes Establishment of Political System in Afghanistan

DID Press: Nooruddin Turabi, a senior Taliban official, has accused the United States of opposing the establishment of a political system in Afghanistan and claimed that countries around the world are seeking excuses to withhold recognition of the Taliban government.

Turabi, head of the Taliban’s Disaster Preparedness Authority, criticized the international community’s approach toward the Taliban administration, saying the group was seeking to expand its relations with countries around the world.

He said dialogue and engagement with different governments were necessary for the Taliban to achieve this objective, while claiming that foreign countries were deliberately looking for reasons not to recognize the group’s rule.

Turabi’s remarks come as the Taliban continues efforts to expand diplomatic and political engagement with regional and international governments.

However, many countries have said that formal recognition of the Taliban depends on changes in its policies, particularly regarding human rights, women’s rights and the establishment of an inclusive political system.

The Taliban has ruled Afghanistan since August 2021 but has not been formally recognized as the country’s government by the United Nations or most governments worldwide.
