CSTO to Deliver New Equipment to Tajikistan-Afghanistan Border

DID Press: The Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO) will deliver new equipment this autumn to strengthen security along the Tajikistan-Afghanistan border, CSTO Secretary-General Taltibek Masadykov has said.

Speaking to Russian media, Masadykov said the new equipment would be delivered to Tajikistan during the autumn season as part of efforts to reinforce the country’s border with Afghanistan.

He stressed that securing the border is not only a concern for Tajikistan but a vital issue for all CSTO members and countries of the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS).

“Securing the border is vital not only for Tajikistan but for all members of the organization, because these are our southernmost lines of defense,” Masadykov said, warning that any major security incident there could have consequences beyond Tajikistan and affect other CSTO and CIS countries.

Masadykov also referred to his recent visit to Tajikistan at the invitation of President Emomali Rahmon. He said he inspected more than 700 km of the country’s border with Afghanistan together with Tajikistan’s border forces commander. The entire border stretches for approximately 1,300 km.

The remarks highlight the CSTO’s growing focus on strengthening Central Asian borders amid security concerns linked to instability and militant threats emanating from Afghanistan.
