AFN 2.5 Billion in Worn Banknotes Removed From Circulation

DID Press: Afghanistan’s central bank says it has collected and destroyed worn-out banknotes worth approximately AFN 2.5 billion over the past year as part of efforts to maintain the quality of currency in circulation.

Hasibullah Noori, spokesperson for Da Afghanistan Bank, said citizens can exchange damaged or worn banknotes for new notes through the central bank or commercial banks.

The move comes amid complaints from citizens and money changers that deteriorated banknotes have created difficulties in daily transactions, with some damaged notes reportedly being refused in the market.

Economic observers say removing unusable banknotes from circulation can help improve the quality of cash in the market and facilitate everyday financial transactions.
