DID Press: Indian rescue teams continued searching the rubble on Monday after a five-storey building used as a student accommodation collapsed in New Delhi’s Satya Niketan area, killing at least six people and leaving several others injured or potentially trapped.
The building, located near Delhi University’s South Campus, collapsed on Sunday afternoon. Rescue teams from the National Disaster Response Force, Delhi Fire Services, police and other agencies have been using heavy machinery and search dogs to locate survivors beneath the debris. At least 11 people have so far been rescued.
The All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) said 11 injured people were taken to the JPN Apex Trauma Centre. Five were brought in dead, while another patient who was initially in critical condition later died from their injuries. Three patients remain under treatment, while another was discharged after observation.
The building was reportedly more than five decades old and had been undergoing renovation. Authorities are investigating whether work in the basement and other structural issues contributed to the collapse. The precise cause has not yet been established.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his condolences to the families of those killed and said he was praying for the speedy recovery of the injured. He said authorities were working at the site and assisting those affected.
