September 9 Declared “Ahmad Shah Massoud Day” in California

DID Press: The city of Sacramento, the capital of California, has declared September 9 as “Ahmad Shah Massoud Day.”

In an official proclamation issued by Sacramento Mayor Kevin McCarty, Ahmad Shah Massoud was described as one of the prominent figures of Afghanistan’s resistance against the Soviet army and later the Taliban and al-Qaeda.

The proclamation praised Massoud’s role in the formation of the anti-Taliban resistance and called on California residents to participate in programs and events related to the observance.

Ahmad Shah Massoud was killed on Sept. 9, 2001, in a suicide attack in Khwaja Bahauddin district of Takhar province, two days before the Sept. 11 attacks in the United States.

Sacramento is one of the major centers of Afghanistan’s diaspora in the United States. Several other U.S. cities have previously commemorated Ahmad Shah Massoud and honored his legacy.
