Kabul University Establishes Independent Faculty of Dari Language and Literature

DID Press: Kabul University has restructured its language and literature programs by upgrading the Dari Language and Literature and Pashto Language and Literature departments into two separate, independent faculties, following a decision by the Supreme Council of Higher Education.

Kabul University announced that the two departments have officially been elevated to independent faculties under Decision No. 11 of the Supreme Council of Higher Education, dated June 5, 2026.

Previously, Dari and Pashto language and literature were taught as two departments within a single Faculty of Languages and Literature. Under the new structure, the Faculty of Dari Language and Literature and the Faculty of Pashto Language and Literature will operate independently.

The university said the change marks the first time in Afghanistan’s higher education system that the two departments have been elevated to separate faculties.

Kabul University’s Dari Language and Literature program already offers bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral studies. The university’s first doctoral programs in Dari and Pashto language and literature were launched in 2013.

The new structure could provide greater administrative and academic independence for the two fields and create opportunities for further development of educational programs and postgraduate studies.
