Doha Meeting Raises Questions Over Taliban’s Ties to al-Qaeda

DID Press: Reports have emerged of a meeting organized by the Taliban in Doha, Qatar, coinciding with the anniversary of the September 11, 2001 attacks, where the al-Qaeda network and the attacks carried out in the United States that year were reportedly supported.

According to sources cited in the reports, the Taliban held the gathering under the title of a “general meeting,” but the content reportedly focused largely on support for al-Qaeda and the September 11 attacks.

The reports also allege that participants emphasized the possibility of repeating methods similar to those used in the September 11 attacks in the future. Speakers at the event reportedly described the concept of progress as extending beyond infrastructure development and emphasized cultivating and strengthening a particular attitude among Muslims toward non-Muslims.

The reported views come amid the Taliban’s longstanding ties with al-Qaeda and various reports of key members of the network being present within the Taliban’s governing structures. Reuters reported this week that al-Qaeda remains active 25 years after the September 11 attacks and continues to maintain ties with the Taliban-led Afghan government, although Kabul denies supporting the group.

In recent years, there have also been repeated warnings about Afghanistan becoming a safe haven for terrorist groups and the potential use of Afghan territory to threaten or launch attacks against other countries.

The reported organization of such a meeting raises serious questions about the Taliban’s approach toward extremist movements and al-Qaeda’s violent legacy. Alleged emphasis on drawing inspiration from the September 11 attacks would go beyond a factional political position and could signal concerns about the persistence of an ideological outlook and the potential reproduction of violent rhetoric in Afghanistan.
