China Calls on SCO Members to Boost Intelligence, Security Cooperation

DID Press: Zhang Hanhui, China’s ambassador to Russia, has called on members of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) to increase intelligence sharing and strengthen cooperation on security and combating crime.

He said SCO members should regularly hold joint exercises and drills to help maintain regional stability and strengthen cooperation mechanisms among security and law-enforcement agencies.

“We should always be a positive force for contributing to security and stability. We need to regularly conduct joint exercises and drills, share intelligence, and strengthen cooperation mechanisms in law enforcement and security,” Zhang said.

The Chinese ambassador, referring to remarks by Chinese President Xi Jinping at the SCO summit, said the organization is at a point where it must fulfill its historical responsibility in shaping global developments and play a greater role in building a “more just and equitable global governance system.”

The 26th meeting of the SCO Council of Heads of State was held in Bishkek, the capital of Kyrgyzstan, on Sept. 1, following summit-related meetings on Aug. 31. The organization’s official records confirm that security cooperation, counterterrorism and responses to transnational threats were among the key areas discussed.
