DID Press: The Washington Post has reported that more U.S. service members have died during the war with Iran than the Pentagon has publicly disclosed, citing U.S. officials familiar with the Defense Department’s internal casualty records.
According to the newspaper, five of six officials said at least 22 U.S. military personnel have died since the conflict began on February 28—four more than the 18 fatalities listed in the Pentagon’s public Defense Casualty Analysis System (DCAS). A sixth official put the number at 23, while noting that not all of the additional deaths were directly tied to combat operations.
The identities and circumstances surrounding the additional deaths remain unclear. The Washington Post said officials familiar with the higher figure expressed frustration that the additional fatalities were not reflected in the Pentagon’s public casualty database. The Pentagon declined to comment on the discrepancy when contacted by the newspaper.
Reuters separately reported that U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth rejected the Washington Post report, describing it as false. The Pentagon has not publicly explained the discrepancy between its database and the figures cited by the newspaper’s sources.
The Washington Post reported that, as of September 18, 14 fatalities were listed under Operation Epic Fury, the U.S. administration’s designation for the Iran war, while four others were recorded separately under overseas operations. The newspaper also reported that more than 820 U.S. service members had been wounded in action since the conflict began.
The report comes amid continued scrutiny of the human and material costs of the conflict. The Washington Post reported that U.S. Central Command estimated the war had cost about $43.6 billion through early September, including $28 billion in munitions, excluding damage to U.S. bases.
