Afghan Mathematician Nominated for Nature’s Global “Inspiring Women in Science” Award

DID Press: Afghan mathematician and university lecturer Zainab Modoodi has been nominated in the Science Outreach category of Nature magazine’s global Inspiring Women in Science Awards, recognizing her academic and educational efforts to expand access to education for Afghan women and girls.

Modoodi, who holds a PhD in mathematics and has previously taught at Kabul University, currently teaches at the University of Calgary in Canada and the Afghanistan Women’s Online University.Alongside her academic work, Modoodi is the founder of Math Bridge, an educational initiative that provides online learning opportunities in mathematics and science for Afghan girls and women who have been deprived of formal education.

Math Bridge focuses on using online education to provide Afghan female students with access to scientific learning, particularly those unable to attend educational institutions because of restrictions on women’s and girls’ education.

Her nomination in the Science Outreach category has drawn attention to the academic and educational work of Afghan women and their efforts to sustain access to education amid restrictions on female education in Afghanistan.
