TAPI Pipeline Construction to Herat Progressing as Planned, Turkmenistan Says

DID Press: Turkmenistan has announced that the transit of natural gas through the Afghan section of the Turkmenistan–Afghanistan–Pakistan–India (TAPI) pipeline is expected to begin in 2026.

Maksud Babayev, chairman of Turkmenistan’s state-owned Turkmengaz company, said construction work on the Serhetabat–Herat section was underway and progressing according to schedule. He made the remarks at the 31st International Conference and Exhibition “Oil and Gas of Turkmenistan” in Ashgabat.

According to Babayev, the TAPI pipeline has an annual capacity of 33 billion cubic metres of natural gas and could help expand economic cooperation and strengthen regional ties.

Turkmengaz and Afghanistan’s Afghan Gas company have also signed a memorandum of understanding on cooperation to supply gas to Herat province.

Alongside the development of the TAPI project, Turkmenistan has prioritised expanding the Galkynysh gas field and diversifying its natural gas export routes.
