Taliban Accuses UNAMA of Bias and Misrepresenting Afghanistan’s Situation

DID Press: Zabihullah Mujahid, spokesperson for the Taliban government, has rejected the latest quarterly report by the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA), accusing the mission of violating the principle of neutrality and portraying Afghanistan’s situation negatively.

In a statement, Mujahid defended the arrests carried out by the Taliban’s Ministry for the Propagation of Virtue and Prevention of Vice and other government bodies, describing the measures as consistent with the law. He also criticized the way these actions were presented in UNAMA’s report.

Mujahid further claimed that the report had failed to acknowledge the Taliban government’s activities and achievements in providing public assistance, accommodating returning migrants, preventing security threats, making political progress and implementing major economic projects with humanitarian dimensions.

He called on UNAMA to prepare its reports on Afghanistan based on accurate information, objective facts and respect for the principle of neutrality.

UNAMA’s quarterly report documented cases of arbitrary arrest and detention, mistreatment of citizens, restrictions imposed on women and girls, and judicial corporal punishment in Afghanistan.

The report also highlighted the detention of former security force members, restrictions on media activities and pressure on some institutions associated with the Shia community.

In another section, UNAMA reported civilian casualties resulting from cross-border incidents. The mission emphasized that its figures covered only cases it had documented and might not include all human rights violations.
