Japan Develops Long-Range Anti-Ship Missile With a Range of Up to 1,500 km
DID Press: Japan is expanding its long-range missile capabilities through the development and deployment of the SSM-ER anti-ship missile. The system is an upgraded version of the Type 12 missile, with an estimated range of between 1,000 and 1,500 km.

Tokyo plans to deploy the missile across all three branches of the Japan Self-Defense Forces — the Ground Self-Defense Force, Maritime Self-Defense Force and Air Self-Defense Force — to enhance the country’s ability to target enemy vessels from long distances.
Within the Ground Self-Defense Force, the system associated with the programme is known as Type 25. Japan’s Air Self-Defense Force is also integrating the missile with Mitsubishi F-2 fighter jets, enabling combat aircraft to carry out anti-ship missions.
The naval component of the programme includes preparations for launching the weapon from surface vessels and submarines. If the programme is completed as planned, Japan will be able to launch its long-range anti-ship missiles from land-based, airborne and naval platforms.
Japan has recently prioritised strengthening its defence and deterrence capabilities in response to regional threats, with the aim of extending the operational reach of its Self-Defense Forces in surrounding waters.
