Pakistan Faces LPG Shortage as Open-Market Prices More Than Double Official Rate

DID Press: Disruptions along the Pakistan-Iran border and a decline in liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) imports have pushed prices in Pakistan’s open market to more than twice the government-set rate.

Pakistani media report that disruptions to LPG imports from Iran have caused a severe shortage in the country, leading to a sharp increase in prices on the open market.

According to Pakistan’s Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority (OGRA), the official price of LPG is approximately 294 Pakistani rupees per kilogram, while an 11.8-kilogram cylinder is priced at 3,470 rupees. However, the product is reportedly selling for as much as 630 rupees per kilogram in the open market.

The head of Pakistan’s LPG Distributors Association has confirmed the critical market situation, saying that at least 70 percent of the country’s LPG requirements were previously met through supplies from Iran.

He added that problems along the shared border between the two countries have disrupted the supply of the fuel.
