US Envoy Khalilzad Meets with Heads of NUG in Kabul
The US special representative on Afghanistan reconciliation and peace process Zalmay Khalilzad has met with the leaders of NUG in the presidential palace on Sunday.
The US special representative on Afghanistan reconciliation and peace process Zalmay Khalilzad has met with the leaders of NUG in the presidential palace on Sunday.
The second VP Sarwar Danish, CEO Abdullah Abdullah and a number of high-ranking authorities attended the meeting, the presidential palace’s press office said in a statement.
During the meeting, both sides discussed ways to bring peace in Afghanistan in a process led and owned by the Afghan government, the statement added.
According to the statement, president Ghani talked about the Afghan government’s efforts to bring peace and security across the country.
For his part, Khalilzad described peace as a sacred process and said that the U.S. government and its people stand with Afghanistan in its quest for peace.
Before traveling to Kabul, Mr Khalilzad met with Pakistani officials in Islamabad, but there are no further details about their meeting.
During the 10-day trip to the region, Khalilzad is expected to travel to UAE, Saudi Arabia, and Qatar.
It was Khalilzad’s first visit to Afghanistan after taking over the new task.
