From Balkh to Herat; Floods Killed Dozens, Displaced Thousands
At least 27 were killed and 34 others injured as a result of heavy rain falls and flash floods in northern Faryab, Badghis, Balkh and western Herat provinces, local officials said on Saturday.

According to officials, floods have destroyed thousands of homes and hundred acres of land.
“In the past three days, floods and heavy rains have left casualties and heavy damages,” said Jawid Bedar, a spokesman for Faryab governor. “floods swept through at nights which killed over 10 people, including children and wounded 25 more,” he added.
According to local sources, floods affected people in Khawja Sabzposh, Dawlat Abad, Qaisar, Pashton Kot districts as well as the capital of Maimana city.
Primary statistics indicate that about 4,000 homes have been destroyed and more than 2,000 livestock were killed.
“7 people were killed as a result of floods in Jond, Qades, Bala Morghab, Moqur and Qal’a-e Naw districts,” said Jamshid Shahabi, a spokesman for governor of Badghis province. “5 people were injured during flash floods,” he added.
“9 people were killed in several districts of Herat province since Thursday,” said Jilani Farhad, a spokesman for Herat governor, adding that “4 others were wounded”.
According to him, Floods have destroyed hundreds of homes, some historic sites, thousands of acres of farmland, bridges and highways.
“Heavy rains financially damaged Koshanda, Dehdadi, Zare, Sholgar and the capital of Mazar-e Sharif city,” said Munir Ahmad Farhad, a spokesman for the governor of Balkh.
Rahmatullah Zahid, the head of counter-incidents department in Balkh province said on Friday that at least 1 killed as result of floods in the province.
Afghanistan’s national disaster management authority, on the other hand, expressed concerns over the continuation of the current situation.
According to national disaster management authority, heavy rains and flash floods, in 19 provinces of Afghanistan, have killed 104 people and injured 237 others since early March.
144 school buildings and 37 mosques were destroyed in these provinces as well.
