US Special Representative for Afghanistan Reconciliation Zalmay Khalilzad arrived in Pakistan on Thursday for talks with senior civil and military leaders.
Pakistan will be the last visit of Khalilzad’s fourth round of trip to the region to facilitate reconciliation process in Afghanistan.
The visit from Pakistan will largely focus on the Afghan peace process.
The officials hinted at the likelihood that Khalilzad will press Pakistani officials to ensure the Afghan Taliban’s involvement in the peace process.
Meanwhile, there are reports that he may meet the Taliban during his visit to Pakistan.
If a meeting is held, it’s likely Khalilzad will press for direct talks with Kabul, something the Taliban have refused.
On the other hand, reports suggest that Taliban warned against any pressure for talks with the Afghan government.
Ambassador Khalilzad left Washington in his fourth round of trips to continue towards facilitating a negotiated settlement to the conflict in Afghanistan.
This time, he traveled to India, China, Afghanistan and Pakistan.
