Germany’s Special Representative for Afghanistan Markus Potzel met with co-founder of Taliban group Mullah Baradar in Qatar as sixth round of peace talks between US and Taliban began Wednesday.


Germany’s Special Representative for Afghanistan Markus Potzel met with co-founder of Taliban group Mullah Baradar in Qatar as sixth round of peace talks between US and Taliban began Wednesday.

According to a statement released Thursday by Zabihullah Mujahid who introduces himself as Taliban spokesperson, Mr Potzel at the head of a delegation met with Mullah Baradar in Doha, Qatar.
“Views were exchanged in the meeting about finding a peaceful resolution to the Afghan issue, ongoing negotiations with the United States and ways of preventing civilian casualties,” the statement read.

Indonesian Foreign Minister Retno Marsudi had met Mullah Baradar as well.
“Peaceful resolution to the Afghan issue and ongoing talks between the negotiation teams of Taliban and United States as well as the cancellation of intra-Afghan conference in Doha were discussed during the meeting,” Taliban said in a statement.

US Special representative on Afghan peace process Zalmay Khalilzad on Wednesday met with Mullah Baradar and exchanged views regarding Afghan peace process.
“It is absolutely vital that the two key agenda points of the previous meeting (full withdrawal of foreign forces from Afghanistan and preventing Afghanistan from harming others) be finalized,” Zabihullah Mujahid quoted Baradar as saying.

US envoy Khalilzad also met with Indonesian FM Retno Marsudi on the sidelines of Doha meeting.
“Very much appreciate her support for the Afghan peace process and compelling offer of assistance,” Khalilzad tweeted after the meeting.
