Possible support of Russia from a specific candidate in Afghanistan is a “rumor” and Moscow does not support any particular candidate, the Russian Embassy in Kabul said in a statement to DID Press.
“Recently, there have been rumors and fake reports that Russia is backing up some Afghan presidential candidates,” read the statement, adding that “these rumors are not true and are intended to mislead Afghan people and to make the situation in the country more critical as the results of the polls are being tabulated.”
The Russian embassy emphasized that the Russian Federation prefers none of the candidates and rejects any interference in the Afghan election process and internal affairs.
“Russia believes that only Afghan people should determine which candidate is best qualified to run for president,” the statement said.
