President Ghani Meets Pence, Merkel on Sideline of MSC

Following separate meetings on the sideline of Munich Security Conference (MSC) held in Germany, president M Ashraf Ghani met US VP Mike Pence and German chancellor Angela Merkel, according to ARG.
They discussed a range of subjects, including the success of South Asia strategy, electoral reforms, regional cooperation and the peace process.
“The United States is committed to preventing Afghanistan once again become a safe haven for terrorists,” Mr Pence said during a meeting with President Ghani in Munich.

President Ghani, on behalf of the Afghan people, thanked the government and the people of the United States of America for sacrifices and cooperation with Afghanistan, saying that the South Asian strategy has improved the situation.
“Using the South Asia strategy, war in Afghanistan is no longer America’s war. Afghan defense and security forces bravely fight and sacrifice themselves for a free country and securing global security,” Ghani said. “The ongoing peace efforts need to lead to a lasting peace,” he stressed.

During a separate meeting with German chancellor, Angela Merkel said his country supports Afghan led and Afghan owned peace process, and fully cooperate in implementing peace agreement.


Germany, as a global strategic partner, will remain with the Afghan government and the people of Afghanistan, she added.
President Ghani thanked for the generous cooperation of Germany in various fields with Afghanistan and its support for the peace process led and owned by Afghan government.
