President Ghani Stresses on Truce in Meeting with Acting US Secretary of Defense
Acting US Secretary of Defense made an unannounced trip to Kabul on Tuesday and met with President Ashraf Ghani at the presidential palace. The two sides discussed the peace process and emphasized on a ceasefire.
“President Ghani articulated that the Afghan government has taken practical steps to ensure peace and now the onus is on the Taliban to prove their commitments for peace,” the presidential palace said in a statement.
President Ghani also stressed that the US-Afghan relations is crucial to the joint fight against terrorism and termed the role of the United States essential in this regard.
According to the statement, both sides called for a comprehensive ceasefire and an end to the violence.
Acting US Secretary of Defense Christopher Miller has recently been appointed by Trump to manage the withdrawal of US troops.
It is worth mentioning that top US military officials have visited Kabul since the intra-Afghan talks in Doha halted and are expected to begin on 5 January 2021.
