Iran–Afghanistan Passenger Train Stalled by Border and Administrative Issues
DID Press: Despite limited demand for cross-border rail travel, Taliban caretaker government has continued to call for the launch of a passenger train between Iran and Afghanistan. However, customs and passport-related obstacles remain key barriers to implementation.

Jabbarali Zakeri, CEO of Iran Railways, said that although there is growing interest in the route, Taliban authorities have yet to demonstrate readiness for its launch.
He noted that the project is currently awaiting the resolution of border issues, particularly customs and immigration procedures, before operations can begin.
Zakeri also clarified that while oil barter revenues have been earmarked for developing rail projects with the approval of Iran’s Supreme Leader, none of these funds have yet been allocated to the railway sector.
He stressed that the immediate priority is overcoming border hurdles to create the necessary conditions for launching Iran–Afghanistan passenger service and expanding international transport infrastructure.
