Iran: Inclusive Gov’t Essential for Lasting Peace in Afghanistan

DID Press: Iran’s permanent representative to the United Nations stressed that establishing an inclusive government in Afghanistan is crucial to preventing renewed conflict and ensuring regional stability.

Speaking at a UN Security Council session on the situation in Afghanistan, Amir Saeed Iravani warned that the absence of a government that genuinely represents Afghanistan people could trigger new violence, increase migration, and exacerbate regional instability.

Iravani emphasized the need for meaningful and practical engagement by the international community with Afghan authorities. He highlighted that humanitarian and economic crises in the country are escalating and stressed that political conditions should not hinder the provision of aid.

He further said that economic sanctions should not obstruct Afghanistan’s stability and development and called for the immediate release of blocked Afghan assets, describing this as key to addressing urgent public needs.

The Iranian diplomat also expressed concern over the situation of women and girls in Afghanistan, urging that human rights, particularly women’s rights, remain a central priority in international policy and engagement with the country.
