DID Press: Former EU foreign policy chief Federica Mogherini has said that military operations by the United States and Israel against Iran were “illegal and reckless” from the outset.

In an article published in Foreign Affairs, Mogherini argued that claims by US and Israeli officials that the strikes were necessary to prevent Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons were not supported by evidence of an imminent threat or diplomatic failure.
She added that even if Iran had been moving toward weaponization, many analysts believe military action would not have stopped the process in the long term.
Mogherini pointed to Iran’s population of more than 90 million and its broad industrial and scientific capabilities, noting that its nuclear program is highly sophisticated and cannot be eliminated through bombing alone.
According to her, while strikes may destroy physical facilities, such infrastructure can be rebuilt deeper underground, with stronger political resolve and domestic backing.
