Power Grid Upgrade Completed, New Electricity Project Launched in Balkh

DID Press: National utility Da Afghanistan Breshna Sherkat has completed the rehabilitation of a power distribution network and transformer systems in Balkh Province, while simultaneously launching work on a new grid project aimed at improving electricity reliability.

According to company officials, the completed project involved repairing damaged transformers and upgrading infrastructure to enhance the stability and quality of electricity supply in the province, where residents have long complained about frequent outages and voltage fluctuations.

The utility also confirmed that construction has begun on another network upgrade in the same region. However, it did not disclose the project’s total cost, funding sources, or implementation timeline—an omission that has continued to fuel public concerns about transparency in infrastructure development.

In recent years, Balkh has faced persistent power disruptions linked to aging equipment, technical failures, and insufficient grid capacity, prompting repeated complaints from households and businesses affected by unreliable electricity services.

Energy specialists say sustainable improvement will require substantial capital investment, modernization of outdated systems, and coordinated technical management. They note that without a comprehensive long-term strategy, incremental repairs alone may not fully resolve the province’s electricity challenges.
