UN Urges Immediate Lifting of Girls’ Education Ban in Afghanistan

DID Press: UN Assistance Mission in Afghanistan has once again called for the immediate lifting of the ban on girls’ education in Afghanistan, warning that more than four and a half years of restrictions have left an entire generation without access to schooling.

In a statement marking the International Day of Girls in Information and Communication Technology, UNAMA stressed that the continued prohibition violates fundamental rights and poses a serious threat to the country’s long-term economic and social development.

The mission highlighted that education—particularly in information and communication technology—plays a critical role in expanding job opportunities, fostering innovation, and supporting long-term stability in Afghanistan.

Amid ongoing economic hardship and rising unemployment, experts warn that excluding girls from education significantly reduces the country’s human capital and development potential.

UNAMA urged the current authorities to remove restrictions as soon as possible and allow girls to return to the education system. The call comes as the international community continues to emphasize equal access to education as a key condition for future engagement with Afghanistan’s authorities.
