Record US Precision Munition Use in 40-Day War Raises Readiness Concerns

DID Press: Newly released data indicate that the military of the United States expended an unprecedented volume of precision-guided munitions during a 40-day conflict with the Iran, triggering warnings about long-term deterrence capacity and combat readiness.

Military assessments suggest that U.S. forces consumed a significant share of their precision weapon stockpiles during the campaign, a level analysts describe as both “historic and alarming.”

According to the figures, approximately 1,000 Tomahawk cruise missiles were launched—around ten times the system’s annual production capacity. In addition, U.S. forces deployed 1,200 Patriot PAC-3 interceptors to counter waves of ballistic missile and drone attacks, equivalent to twice the yearly manufacturing output of that system.

In the long-range strike category, the U.S. military reportedly used 1,100 JASSM cruise missiles, roughly three times annual production levels. Another 1,000 PrSM and ATACMS missiles were also fired, representing about double their combined yearly output.

Defense experts warn that replenishing such large inventories—even with expanded industrial production—could take several years. They note that the scale of munition consumption highlights not only the high operational cost of the 40-day conflict but also the strain placed on the U.S. defense industrial base and its future crisis-response capability.
