UN Expert Raises Concerns Over Taliban ‘Preachers Law’
DID Press: Richard Bennett, the UN Special Rapporteur on human rights in Afghanistan, has expressed concern over the newly enacted “Preachers Law” by the Taliban, warning it may discriminate against non-Hanafi religious groups.

In a recent statement, Bennett said the law appears to favor the Hanafi school of Islamic jurisprudence and could marginalize other religious communities, raising serious human rights implications.
He stressed that the legislation may conflict with international human rights standards, particularly those protecting religious and ethnic minorities, and emphasized that all legal frameworks must align with these principles.
The UN expert added that a detailed review of the law is currently underway, with further findings expected to be released at a later stage.
