UK Comments on Border Strikes Escalate Pakistan–Taliban Tensions

DID Press: Remarks by a British official on reported civilian casualties in border strikes have intensified diplomatic friction between Pakistan and the Taliban administration in Afghanistan, adding a new layer of strain to already volatile relations.

Richard Lindsay expressed concern over reports of civilian deaths following recent Pakistani military operations in Kunar province, warning that continued strikes could worsen the humanitarian situation in border regions.

Pakistan’s Foreign Ministry rejected the comments, calling them “misinformed” and insisting that its operations target only militant hideouts. A spokesperson said the military avoids civilian areas and dismissed allegations of non-combatant casualties as baseless.

The Pakistan Army also stated that its ongoing operation, described as “Ghazab al-Haq,” continues with the aim of eliminating militant threats along the border. Officials claimed that dozens of civilians inside Pakistan have been killed in recent months due to militant attacks, which Islamabad attributes to groups operating from Afghan territory.

Taliban officials, however, have accused Pakistan of striking civilian areas in Kunar and causing casualties, urging international actors to pressure Islamabad to halt cross-border operations and comply with international law.

Local reports from border communities indicate growing displacement and rising insecurity as clashes continue to affect civilian life on both sides of the border.
