Pakistani Senator Condemns Taliban Child Marriage Policy

DID Press: Pakistan Senator Sherry Rehman has strongly criticized a Taliban-issued regulation on family separation, calling the legalization of child marriage in Afghanistan “shocking” and joining growing international condemnation.

Rehman reacted to the Taliban’s new “family separation” regulation, expressing concern over what critics describe as the legal normalization of child marriage in Afghanistan.

She reposted comments by UK Foreign Office minister Hamish Falconer, who also described the measure as “astonishing.”

Falconer said child marriage constitutes a clear violation of human rights and stressed that girls should be protected rather than forced into marriage.

The Taliban announced on 24 Jawza that the regulation had been approved by their leader Hibatullah Akhundzada and published in the official gazette.

Critics argue that the document creates a legal framework that could enable child marriage and undermines fundamental rights of women and girls.
