Russia-Taliban Rapprochement Seen as Opportunity for India, Challenge for Pakistan

DID Press: Deepening ties between Russia and the Taliban could reshape regional dynamics, creating new opportunities for India while potentially undermining Pakistan’s traditional influence in Afghanistan, according to analysts.

In an analysis, the The Times of India argued that India, which has long maintained a strategic partnership with Russia, has also expanded contacts with the Taliban in recent years to safeguard its interests and investments in Afghanistan.

The report noted that Amir Khan Muttaqi visited India in 2025, reflecting growing engagement between New Delhi and the Taliban administration.

Analysts believe stronger Russian cooperation with the Taliban could provide India with greater diplomatic space to expand ties with Kabul without formally recognizing the Taliban government. Such a development could also reduce the likelihood of Afghanistan falling entirely within the sphere of influence of Pakistan or China.

The evolving relationship may also advance one of India’s long-term strategic goals: establishing broader trade and connectivity links with Central Asia through Afghanistan while bypassing Pakistan.

For Pakistan, however, the growing Russia-Taliban partnership may present new challenges. Islamabad, once regarded as the Taliban’s closest regional backer, has experienced increasingly strained relations with Kabul in recent years.

Border clashes, militant attacks, and reciprocal military actions have contributed to worsening ties between Afghanistan and Pakistan. In this context, closer cooperation between Russia and the Taliban could further erode Pakistan’s traditional leverage in Afghanistan and alter the regional balance of power.
