Two Chinese Firms Eye Investment in Afghanistan’s Power Sector

DID Press: Two Chinese companies have expressed interest in investing in Afghanistan’s electricity sector, proposing cooperation with the national power utility on electrical equipment manufacturing and workforce training.

Afghanistan’s national power company, Da Afghanistan Breshna Sherkat (DABS), said Chinese firms Huishen and Helix have signaled their readiness to invest in the country’s power industry.

According to DABS, separate meetings were held with representatives of the two companies to discuss investment opportunities in electrical equipment production, technical capacity-building, and the development of specialized skills for power-sector employees.

Huishen plans to support workforce training, maintenance and repair of power-grid transformers, the establishment of specialized laboratories, and the creation of a joint training center.

Helix, meanwhile, has expressed interest in investing in transformer manufacturing, electrical equipment production, and the establishment of a power-cable factory in Afghanistan.

DABS officials welcomed the interest of foreign investors, saying the necessary conditions and incentives for investment in Afghanistan’s electricity sector are in place. They added that such cooperation could help transfer technical expertise, create jobs, and reduce the country’s reliance on imported electrical equipment.

Technical meetings are expected to be held to discuss implementation details and the scope of the proposed projects.
