US Lawmaker: Recognizing Taliban Would Be “Reckless and Dangerous”

DID Press: Nancy Mace has renewed her opposition to any future U.S. recognition of the Taliban government, warning that granting legitimacy to the group would be “reckless and dangerous.”

In a post on social media platform X, Mace announced a new legislative proposal aimed at preventing U.S. federal agencies from recognizing the Taliban-led administration in Afghanistan.

The Republican congresswoman stated that the bill would also seek additional terrorism-related designations and measures targeting the Taliban.

The Taliban are a terrorist organization, and any effort to legitimize them is reckless and dangerous,” Mace wrote.

According to Mace, the proposed legislation—titled the Preventing Recognition of Terrorist Governments Act—would formally designate the Taliban as a foreign terrorist organization, place the self-proclaimed Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan on the list of state sponsors of terrorism, and prohibit U.S. government entities from recognizing it.

She said the measure would establish a clear policy position that the Taliban should never be accepted as a legitimate government by the United States.

Mace also pointed to the Taliban’s record since returning to power, arguing that any move toward legitimizing the group would pose significant risks.
