Lula Tells Trump to Stay Out of Brazil’s Elections
DID Press: Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva has warned that the United States should not interfere in Brazil’s upcoming presidential election, scheduled for October, amid renewed political tensions following the G7 Summit in Évian-les-Bains.

Lula made the remarks after meeting Donald Trump at the summit, stating that while Trump is free to maintain personal ties with Brazil’s former president Jair Bolsonaro and his family, electoral matters must remain strictly internal.
“From my point of view, he can continue to like Bolsonaro, the father, the son, or the grandson. That is not a problem. Taste is not something to be judged,” Lula said, emphasizing that personal preferences are separate from state affairs.
However, the Brazilian president drew a clear boundary regarding foreign involvement in domestic politics, stressing that elections must remain sovereign matters.
“Do not interfere in Brazil’s elections, because Brazil’s elections belong to Brazilians, just as American elections belong to Americans, not to me,” he added.
Lula concluded by calling for mutual respect between both countries, saying that Brazil expects the same level of respect it extends to the United States.
