Uzbekistan: Trans-Afghan Railway Cost May Exceed $7B

DID Press: The estimated cost of the Trans-Afghan Railway project could surpass $7 billion, significantly higher than earlier projections, according to Uzbekistan’s Deputy Minister of Transport, Jasurbek Choriev.

Speaking on the sidelines of the Tashkent International Investment Forum, Choriev said updated assessments indicate that construction costs have risen well above the initial estimate of $4.6 billion. He added that the project’s technical and economic feasibility studies are expected to be completed by the end of 2026.

According to reports by Interfax, Uzbekistan’s Ministry of Transport estimates that implementation of the railway will take at least five years once construction begins.

Choriev noted that negotiations are ongoing with the United Arab Emirates and Qatar regarding participation in the project. He described the railway as the shortest route connecting Central Asia to the port of Karachi in Pakistan, while also creating a transport link between India, Central Asia, and members of the Commonwealth of Independent States.

The official further stated that the Eurasian Development Bank has expressed readiness to support financing efforts. The corridor is expected to handle nearly 20 million tons of cargo annually once operational.

Choriev also referenced recent remarks by Shavkat Mirziyoyev, who highlighted the strategic importance of the Trans-Afghan Railway during the Fifth Tashkent International Investment Forum, describing it as a key route for direct access to southern ports.

Earlier, Russia also signaled its willingness to participate in the project.
