Construction Begins on Herat’s 2nd Urban Underpass
DID Press: Authorities in Herat have launched construction of the city’s second urban underpass, a project aimed at easing traffic congestion and improving transportation flow in one of western Afghanistan’s busiest districts.

According to officials from the Herat Municipality, the underpass is being built opposite the city’s regional hospital at a cost of approximately 38 million afghanis, funded through the municipality’s development budget. The project is expected to be completed within six months.
Mawlawi Abdul Ahad Khairkhwa said the project will cover an area of 2,500 square meters and include two underground levels.
He added that the development will feature a two-storey commercial market with pharmacies, medical service centers, and a standard parking facility designed to accommodate vehicles visiting the area.
Municipal officials say the project forms part of broader efforts to modernize urban infrastructure, reduce traffic bottlenecks, and improve public services for residents of Herat.
