Pakistan Suspends Geo News Broadcast Following Religious Outcry

DID Press: Pakistan Media Regulatory Authority (PEMRA) has suspended broadcast operations of Geo News for 15 days over the alleged airing of images linked to revered Islamic figures during a special Muharram program.

Pakistan’s Information Minister Attaullah Tarar said the decision was taken under media laws following public and religious backlash over the program “Safar-e-Ishq,” which aired during Ashura commemorations. Authorities stated the content reportedly included depictions associated with the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) and Imam Hasan (A.S.) and Imam Hussain (A.S.), triggering widespread criticism from religious groups.

Religious parties and sectarian organizations condemned the broadcast, calling it offensive to Islamic sensitivities and demanding strict legal action. Geo News, one of Pakistan’s most-watched news channels, faces scrutiny as regulatory proceedings continue.
