Financial Times: Iran’s Power Display at the Heart of Shia World

DID Press: The Financial Times has described the funeral ceremonies for the Martyred Leader of the Islamic Revolution, Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei, in Najaf and Karbala as a demonstration of Iran’s ability to mobilize large regional audiences and maintain the influence of the so-called Axis of Resistance.

According to the newspaper, Khamenei’s body was transferred to Iraq for funeral ceremonies in the holy cities of Najaf and Karbala, where millions of mourners from across Iraq and the wider Shiite world are expected to participate before the body is returned to Mashhad for burial.

The report noted that Khamenei first visited Najaf and Karbala as an 18-year-old pilgrim but was unable to return because of political restrictions and the Iran-Iraq War. It said the return of his body to the two holy cities carries both symbolic and geopolitical significance.

The newspaper added that the ceremonies extend beyond a traditional funeral, portraying them as a strategic message to the United States and Israel. It argued that the events underscore Iran’s continued capacity to mobilize supporters through religious networks and regional alliances despite sustained external pressure.

According to the report, the ceremonies also signal Tehran’s commitment to maintaining ties with its regional allies and preserving its influence in West Asia.
