India’s Education Minister Resigns After 36 Days of Student Protests

DID Press: India’s Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan has resigned following 36 days of nationwide student protests, marking one of the most significant political reversals for Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government since it took office in 2014.

The protests were triggered by the alleged leak of questions for India’s nationwide medical entrance examination and the subsequent cancellation of the exam results, forcing more than two million candidates to retake the test.

The movement, initially known online by the satirical name “Cockroach Party,” rapidly evolved into a nationwide Generation Z protest campaign. Demonstrators demanded the education minister’s resignation, comprehensive reforms to the examination system, compensation for affected families, and an end to security crackdowns on protesters.

Following negotiations, the Indian government reportedly accepted the movement’s key demands, after which protest leaders announced the end of the demonstrations.

Reports indicate that the uncertainty and psychological stress caused by the examination controversy contributed to the suicides of at least 12 students, adding a significant humanitarian dimension to the crisis.

Analysts say the protests exposed broader frustrations among India’s youth over unemployment, alleged corruption in recruitment and examination systems, and declining public trust in state institutions.

International media have described the demonstrations as one of Asia’s most significant youth-led protest movements in recent years, drawing comparisons with student-led mobilizations in Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, and Nepal, where young people have played increasingly influential roles in shaping political developments.
