UN Warns Floods Leave Afghan Women Facing Healthcare Crisis

DID Press: The United Nations has warned that women and girls, particularly pregnant women, are bearing the heaviest humanitarian burden following deadly floods in eastern Afghanistan, as damage to health facilities and disrupted medical services severely limit access to essential care.

According to the UN, the recent floods have disproportionately affected women and girls, with the destruction of healthcare infrastructure and restricted access to medical services placing expectant mothers and people requiring urgent treatment at heightened risk.

The warning comes after Taliban authorities reported that at least 24 people were killed and 85 others injured in recent flooding across Nuristan Province and neighboring areas.

The floods have also disrupted healthcare facilities and other essential public services in affected communities, further complicating emergency response efforts.

The United Nations said humanitarian agencies continue to provide emergency assistance, but stressed that limited access to healthcare remains one of the most pressing challenges facing women in flood-affected areas. It warned that prolonged disruptions could pose serious risks to the health of both mothers and newborns.
